How to Improve Homeschool Communication with Your Groups

You’re a homeschool group leader or a co-op/resource center teacher. You need to tell your group or class about an activity or assignment. Let’s talk about how you can improve homeschool communication with your group.

The real problem we have with SOCIALIZATION is the struggle of finding activities we want to do (with kids our kids want to hang out with and moms that we want to hang out with). One way to find activities you want to do is to plan them yourself.

So, you take the initiative to organize an activity. Start with activities you want to do…and hope that you’ll meet some kids and moms you want to hang out with. Now how do you promote it, so others will come?

Homeschool Communication Problems

Facebook is our go-to message board for many of our homeschool groups. Because it’s FREE! We love free. But, Facebook has always been a little inefficient with the way the posts shift around based on recent activity.

Now, Facebook has been tinkering with their algorithm lately. Groups messages are not showing up in the news feeds of our members. Notifications are not reminding members to check the group’s posts either. Even as the group leader/owner/moderator, I miss messages for several days.

Improve Homeschool Communication

We’re not going to get rid of Facebook. It’s still a very useful tool to communicate with other homeschool groups. Individuals can optimize their Facebook experience when they adjust their Facebook settings. But, it’s not the only tool we should be using.

The key to communication is to relay and repeat the event and activity in a variety of ways. I’d use carrier pigeons, and smoke signals if it would help. Anyone else remember when we did phone trees? That’s when everyone was assigned 2-3 people to pass along the message. It was the real life-version of the “telephone game.”

Fortunately, we have lots of great resources available instead! Try email blasts, text alerts and video chats. When you take the initiative to organize and activity, you want people to come. That’s the point! If you promote it, they will come.
